How Cellphone Location Tracking Is Possible
Now I should warn you that this post is a little bit “nerdy” 
I go into some details about how the actual tracking works and for most people, this information isn’t really needed. If you just want to be able to track a cell phone, then use the link above and you can download a program that lets you see exactly where a phone is at all times.
In most cases the only thing required to initiate cellphone location tracking is to download the software on to the target phone. Some processes can be done without affecting the handset of the phone at all. Others can affect the target phone’s performance. My research evaluated how these different processes are carried out.
The first type of cellphone location tracking is Network-Based Tracking. Network Based Tracking is done by triangulation. Triangulation involves the target handset and two cellphone towers. The towers measure the distance of the phone to the tower and using this data they can project where the two distances intersect. This intersection is the location of the cellphone.
One serious advantage of this form of tracking is that it does not intrude on the target phone or the target phone’s user. This means specifically that it will not slow down the phone’s performance or inhibit the user’s interaction with the phone.
A second type of cellphone location tracking is handset based. This type of tracking works by using cell identification, or GPS signal, to track the phone depending on the capabilities of the phone.
This process has a large drawback in that it can slow down the target phone’s performance or inhibit the user’s interaction with the phone. This can alert the user that something unknown is working against the phone. If this happens the user will likely ignore the problem, try and fix it or take it to a retail store to be fixed. In the latter two of these cases, the risk of uninstalling or damaging the software on the phone is run.
A third style is SIM based cellphone location tracking. This style uses radio measurements to detect the location of the cellphone. Not always the best choice, this process uses data stored on the SIM card which may different from the actual phone data.
Some companies offer a hybrid style of different varieties of these three processes. They range in features and price so all considerations should be taken into account when deciding which to make use of.

I’ll be honest, this post is a lot more technical than it needed to be! To be frank, most people don’t really care how cellphone location tracking works, they just want to be able to use it.
